NEW YORK (June 13, 2024) – National Urban League President Marc H. Morial today said he was relieved by the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision protecting access to safe medical abortions, but concerned the decision does not go far enough.
“Today’s decision is a victory for reproductive rights, but a fragile and possibly temporary one,” Morial said. “In determining that the hate group-represented “Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine” did not have standing to challenge the FDA’s 2000 approval of mifepristone, the court left a door open for challenges by other plaintiffs.
“Unfortunately, the court did not address the validity of AHM’s ludicrous argument based on discredited “experts” and flawed research.
“Eliminating or restricting the use of mifepristone would disproportionately harm Black woman, who are nearly three times more likely than white women to die of complications from pregnancy or childbirth – and almost 30 times more likely than women in other wealthy countries. More than 1,200 women died from pregnancy or childbirth in 2021 alone. The risk of dying from mifepristone, on the other hand, is nearly nonexistent.
“The National Urban League remains committed to defending access to safe medical abortion and looks forward to an unambiguous decision that places the health and lives of pregnant women above reckless political grandstanding.”
