Post-election Reflections & Gratitude for Our Community
As a new year begins, like many of you — our steadfast donors — I’ve been reflecting on 2024 including the outcome of the election, what we can learn and how we can prepare for the impact of the election outcomes.
Multiple factors led to the results of the election, and all of them deserve analysis. However, let me just highlight a few points. Findings from the American Electorate Voter poll, which surveyed more than 9,000 voters, 3,750 of whom were Hispanic, reveal the following:
- The most significant driver of the election was economic discontent. For Latino voters, four of their top five priorities were economic: the cost of basic necessities, wages, housing and health care costs.
- Contrary to the coverage of exit poll reports, a majority of Hispanic voters (62%) supported Harris over Trump (37%), including a majority of Latino men (56%), and a supermajority of Latinas (66%).
Based on work with our Affiliates and partners nationwide, as well as research from three of the largest Hispanic voter polls this cycle, we know that Latinos remain an under-invested and under-mobilized segment of the electorate for both political parties. This is a critical concern, especially with two million more Latino U.S. citizens reaching voting age by 2026 and four million by 2028. Our electorate is up for grabs by those who choose to embrace, rather than dismiss and alienate, them.
Now, we are preparing for what’s ahead. The incoming administration will likely focus on immigration and the economy — two areas where UnidosUS has decades of experience, and a well-defined set of priorities aligned with our community. Care for our community will be paramount. In 2025 – with your invaluable support, and in partnership with our Affiliates – we will work to protect mixed status families and Affiliate communities from the threat of deportation or separation; strengthen communications with our Affiliates to reinforce our role as a trusted messenger; and invest in Affiliates’ capacity to advocate at the local level.
I’m filled with deep gratitude for your steadfast support. Despite the obstacles we may face, together, we will anchor ourselves in our shared values and purpose, with an unwavering commitment to protect and defend our community and our democracy.
Adelante, siempre adelante,
Janet Murguía
