(National Urban League) —
National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Alexander v. South Carolina Conference of the NAACP
“Yesterday, the conservatives on the Supreme Court continued their assault on Black voters by gutting our power to fight racial gerrymandering. In the 6-3 decision in Alexander v. South Carolina Conference of the NAACP the Court created an even higher bar for plaintiffs to clear in order to challenge districts divided up by race. Instead, the Court has given the green light for state legislatures to dilute the power of Black communities under the pretense of good faith and political affiliation.
“The National Urban League is committed to defending democracy and fighting against those who would take us back in time. We will not rest until all of the harmful decisions made by these partisans in robes are undone. The Supreme Court does not have the final word on our democracy. Congress must protect our access to the ballot box by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.”
