Friday night lights are coming to Lacona, Iowa, as two eight-player football programs prepare for a matchup that carries real weight in the standings. KCCI’s Week 7 Wild Card game — chosen by viewers on the KCCI Facebook page — features the Moravia Mohawks traveling to take on the Southeast Warren Warhawks, with highlights set to air during Friday Night Hype coverage.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Southeast Warren’s home field in Lacona.
Moravia Riding Momentum at 4-2
The Mohawks come into this game with confidence after a 42-28 homecoming victory over Baxter last week, pushing their record to 4-2. Much of Moravia’s offensive success runs through senior quarterback Kale Moore, who ranks seventh in the eight-player classification with 16 touchdown passes on the season. Moore has thrown for 1,083 yards and contributed another 244 yards on the ground.
Senior running back Blake Ewing has been a workhorse in the backfield, leading the Mohawks with 523 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. On the receiving end, junior Casen Woodward leads the team with 26 catches for 396 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Moravia’s defense has been equally formidable. The Mohawks have recorded 13 interceptions on the season — second in eight-player football only to Bedford’s 15. Moore himself has 5 picks, while Woodward has added 4. Ewing anchors the defense with 42.5 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Senior Clayton Robinson has been a force in the backfield with 9 tackles for loss and 3 sacks.
Southeast Warren Looking to Snap a Two-Game Skid
The Warhawks enter Friday’s contest at 3-3, having dropped their last two games — a 28-26 loss at Montezuma on Sept. 25 and a 22-6 defeat at Lenox last Friday. Southeast Warren will need a strong performance to reverse that trend against a Moravia team with playoff ambitions.
Junior quarterback Sawyer Allen has completed 47 of 74 passes for 565 yards and 9 touchdowns, though he has also thrown 5 interceptions. On the ground, junior Tucker Dierking has been the team’s most explosive offensive weapon, leading Southeast Warren with 654 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns.
Defensively, senior Cael Dop leads the Warhawks with 54.5 tackles and ranks second in the eight-player class with 11 sacks. Sophomore Gunner Weatherman has 4 interceptions, including a 70-yard pick-six, giving Southeast Warren playmakers capable of changing the game’s momentum in a hurry.
