UAW Delegation Heads to Germany to Address Webasto Union-Busting

Detroit, MI – UAW announced that a delegation of UAW leaders will address illegal anti-union behavior at Webasto, a German parts supplier with Detroit-area plants, in Germany next week. This follows Unfair Labor Practice charges filed by Webasto workers with the National Labor Relations Board. UAW is contemplating filing a complaint in German court if Webasto’s actions continue.

“We’re just asking for Webasto to respect our basic rights,” said Isaiah Towns, from Webasto – Detroit’s Bonding department. “No one should endure what Webasto is putting us through. The threats, harassment, and bullying need to stop.”

A majority of the 600 workers at Webasto – Detroit filed for their union election in late July, scheduled for September 9 and 10. Workers report facing significant anti-union harassment and intimidation from Webasto management. The factory produces the rooftop for Ford Broncos made at the Michigan Assembly Plant. Webasto distributed anti-union literature featuring the Ford Bronco logo and the message “No Bucking Union.”

“This company needs to be held accountable,” said Pelle Burnett, from Webasto – Detroit’s PU department. “Webasto will go to any length to stop us from winning collective bargaining rights. Even though we haven’t won our union yet, we’re ready to Stand Up against this unacceptable behavior.”

Workers claim Webasto has:

• Disciplined, isolated, intimidated, and terminated workers in retaliation for union support
• Changed bathroom policies and denied a union supporter bathroom use for two hours
• Required workers to attend captive audience meetings
• Used video cameras to surveil union activity
• Maintained an unlawful rulebook

The NLRB is investigating 17 instances of unlawful conduct by Webasto managers noted in an Unfair Labor Practice charge. If found in violation of German law, Webasto could face serious financial penalties.

An LM-10 filed with the U.S. Department of Labor revealed Webasto paid over $300,000 to an anti-union consulting firm at the Webasto-Pilot Road plant. Despite this, those workers won a first contract with raises up to 51% over three years, better benefits, and improved attendance policies.

Besides the Detroit election, a majority of 35 workers at Webasto’s Hearns facility filed to form their union on August 27 with UAW. An election date is being scheduled.

“Workers want a voice, a free and fair election, and their rights respected,” said Steve Gonzales, president of UAW Local 3000. “We will never back down from ensuring workers win what they deserve.”
